Purpose of Inclusive Language Process

ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ recognizes that students may identify themselves by a first name other than their legal first name. For this reason, Montco has developed an inclusive name and language process. This process allows for greater representation and recognition of students' identity development throughout their journey with Montco.

The Inclusive Language process includes the ability for students to identify a first name that is different than their legal first name.  Students can designate a prefix for more formal use. An option to select gender identity exists and is used for data collection purposes. The process also provides students with the choice to designate their gender pronouns if they so desire.  

We believe that this process is important for the College Community and at the same time understand that it may not be used by everyone.  Students may continue to use their legal name and not make any changes.

Montco is committed to serving its diverse community and creating a learning and working environment that is safe, productive, respectful, and free from discrimination. 

Definitions:
  • Legal First Name – The name that is reflected on legal documents such as a birth certificate, social security card, passport, driver’s license, and other such documents controlled by local, state, or federal agencies. 
  • First Name – The name that an individual wishes to go by that is not their legal first name. This was sometimes referred to as preferred or chosen name in the past.
  • Prefix – A prefix is a formal way to respectfully address someone before their name. Some examples are (Ms., Mx., Mr.).
  • Gender Identity - Gender identity refers to one’s inner concept of self. Some examples are (male, female, a blend of both or neither). It refers to how individuals perceive themselves and what they call themselves. One's gender identity can be the same or different from their sex assigned at birth.
  • Pronouns - Gender pronouns are the set of pronouns that an individual would like others to use to reflect that person's own gender identity. Some examples are (she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs).
How to Designate a First Name/Prefix/Gender Identity/Pronouns
  • New Students – New and prospective students have an opportunity to identify a new first name, prefix, gender identity, or pronouns through the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵ Application process. Once an applicant becomes an enrolled student, they have an opportunity to identify first name, prefix, gender identity, or pronouns through the current student process (see below).
  • Current students – Current students may designate first name, prefix, gender pronouns, or pronouns at any time by completing the corresponding section on the
  •  Employees – Montco employees should email HR@mc3.edu to learn more about a similar process for employees.

NOTE: Full implementation of this process is ongoing and new information, systems, and services may be added each year through continued feedback and dialogue from the College Community.
